Chapter Twenty

Gweyir hadn’t spoken since they left the castle, she sulked as she sat on the roof of a tavern in the outer edges of the village. They left her alone as she sat in silence and dangled her feet over the edge of the building.

“We have nowhere to go.” Cithrel shrugged and paced along the roof, she’d been doing that for the past hour.

“We know Cithrel,” Haldvar groaned, sick of his niece's repeated behaviour. “And when we have a solution we’ll tell you. Continuing to say it only pushes back the amount of time we have to think of something.”

Cithrel mumbled something under her breath and sat down on the roof beside Lillian. She knew a place they could go, but it would cause a lot of questions. Not from the fae but from her friends. She just wasn’t sure if she was ready to drag Rory and Griffin into all of this.

“Just admit it,” Cithrel playfully nudged Lillian with her elbow. She looked to Cithrel, a confused look in her eyes as she frowned. “You like him.”

Cithrel flicked her gaze to Orrian who was checking out the street below. Lillian's face went as red as a tomato and she froze. She shifted her position, all of a sudden feeling the tiles digging into her skin.

“The best part,” Cithrel continued, her teasing smirk growing wider. She leant forward and whispered in Lillian’s ear. “He likes you back.”

“Stop it!” Lillian glared at Cithrel with gritted eyes, her eyes burning holes in her face.

Cithrel nudged Lillian again and she responded by gently pushing her back. The fae laughed as she caught herself by putting an arm on the roof behind her. Lillian smiled at Cithrel and then looked over to Orrian, he was so interested in whatever was going on at the entrance to the tavern that he didn’t notice the human girl’s eyes smiling at him, admiring him.

Lillian looked at her hands as her thumbs pressed against each other. She thought for a moment and then spoke, “I think I know somewhere we can go.” Everyone turned to her in surprise and she told them about her friends staying at the inn.

When they agreed that it would be a good idea, rather than sitting on a roof all night, Lillian led them across the rooftops. They already weren’t far from the inn so it only took a few minutes to get there.

Lillian climbed down the side of the building and opened the window that led into the room she had slept in before running off with the fae. She slipped inside and the
